To be brutally honest and transparent, there will always be some bias and discrimination from the way we have been brought up. It is only a question of degree. On my part, I grew up with many close Malay friends in primary school and have no problems with Malay colleagues. I cannot speak for every Singaporean Chinese but I think the Malay community should start helping themselves by stop being paranoid about racism and discrimination. Never let what is said bother you. Just focus on getting better and ahead in life. If every Malay has this ambition, the atreriotyping on Malays will change for action speak louder than words. Wink

Perhaps, just perhaps,
There is something wrong with the materialistic / econocentric approach?
Why cant a certain cultural group have a more laid back, family friendly customs and practices?
Is it fair to continuously apply external pressure for them to change their culture and mindset?
Dont forget the Chinese and Indians are immigrants. Merchants.
If you go to China or India, to the interior rural areas, Im sure there are people sitting all day not doing much, same with rural villages areas in South East Asia.
I dont think Malays in Singapore are lazy. This is an incorrect term. Perhaps the more correct one is, discon.... discon...eh, disconjected from the material chase.
Simply,
If an expert do a survey of family happiness, spiritual fulfillness, etc, I believe they will on average score better than Chinese.
So,
I dont think they are lazy, but different world view.
And it is not fair to only measure formal education, income level, etc, yardstick used by merchant-immigrant mindset on them.
Besides, in the Western world also, academics are starting to realize and measure 'real' prosperity, which includes happiness, stress level, family relationship, spirituality etc. More money doesnt mean you are more well off when you are stressed and unhappy.
So what Im saying is,
The term 'lazy' is very one sided view, looking from one point of view only.
And I believe more appreciation, and more softer understanding, is needed, instead of keep pressing for 'reform' for them to 'revolutionize' their culture and customs.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a simple life...... but problem arise when those wanting a simple life expect others to behave just like them......

If you a happy with a low 4 figure pay and 4 kids inside a 3-room HDB, good for you.... be content. But i know of people (malay & chinese) who blame others of working hard, say it makes them look bad...... They blame govt for not taking care of them and keep on telling me how they are being oppress.

What BS is this Exclamation If you are content with this type of life, then say it out loud...... don't blame anyone for whatever problem you will face later. But problem is, these are the same people who will not work OT because they claim they are "content with life" and at the same time claim each Payday that some higher forces are oppressing them by keeping their pay low..... As I've said before, I have no issue with the 'tidak apa' ('it doesn't matter') mentality. If anything, to be contented with what you have and to lead a simple life is an achievement in itself.

But the big issue I have is with us Malays taking the concept too far and letting it metamorphose into 'tidak apa-thy'. I've seen too many Malays not doing well in life and trying to pin the blame on others instead of looking at their own lack of effort. When I was in the Army I'm sad to say that many of the Malays in my company felt that I was a heretic of sorts just because I'm was a A Level student and they had less education.

And I swear to God, I didn't treat them any differently just because they were any less educated. If anything, some of them saw past the education barrier and I became good friends with them. They were the ones who told me about all the backstabbing and politics that goes on behind my back. But as for the rest... they backstabbed me and whispered behind my back that I was snooty and arrogant just because I had higher education than them.

I'm a medic, and it has been drilled into my head to treat everyone equally, even if they are my enemies who have sworn to kill me. I see us all as soldiers with a common goal, but they refused to share that viewpoint.

Heck, I once overheard them talking about two PCs who had A Level education. I heard one of them say, 'I can't stand this 2LT Ismail who has a full A Level cert. At least for 2LT Ali, even though he was in JC, at least he dropped out of it! Now that's something for me to look up to!' (names changed to protect privacy)

You want to live the simple life, then that's your choice. But if you're going to blame others for your lack of success and diss them for putting in the effort and doing their best, I must protest.

Well, in my opinion, to remove all hatred towards the malay race, the government has to do something to reform the malay youths. From my observation, they are the main cause of racial issues. All my “racist” friends have issues against these malay youths, particularly those less educated ones, yet none have problems with the malay race as a whole.

there's black sheeps everywhere! chinese, malay, indian or caucasian black sheeps... just because one of them's bad means all are bad...

i think with the new generation of singaporeans, race becomes less of an importance.... and given most singaporeans are pretty tolerant to nasty comments... (yes, there's a couple of brainless loud mouths here and there)

singapore's a great place to live in.... and i love being a singaporean... it really doesn't matter what's your race... we're all human... made of the same flesh and blood.

To me, condemning the antics of the misguided few is not tantamount to racism. It is only stereotyping if you tar all the members of the Malay race with the characteristics of the misguided few. So in my point of view, I don't see your friends as 'racist' so long as they maintain the status quo of refraining from tarring everyone with the same brush.

I myself condemn ah bengs who make a fool of themselves in public and disturb the peace. I know that they're not representative of all Chinese, and as such I don't attribute their antics to all Chinese. Heck, many of my closest friends are Chinese.

The way I see it, though, 'the misguided few' among the Malays, though, is becoming more and more like the norm instead of the exception. While the government can take steps to get them back in line, ultimately I believe that change can only come from within.

So long as we Malays don't give ourselves a great kick in our rear ends and rid ourselves of the idiotic concepts of 'tidak apa-thy' and 'janji Melayu', we can never raise ourselves up from our own drudgery.

i too condemn ah bengs, but in the case of malay race, the proportion is just too big to list them as the "few big sheeps". the culture among the malay youths seems to be engaging in vices as cool. underage sex, smoking, gangsterism, etc. police reports have revealed that a big proportion, sometimes more than half, are of malay race. this truly shows the seriousness of the issue. thus, i think a big cleanup of these youths shld be the solution. and sorry if i offended u or what, it's just my observation and opinion.

i'm a loner at my school times... only the malay boys would speak to me and they r really kind... i like malay girls too, they r the only ones to gave a damn to be nice to me without me approaching them(i may look stuck up(to all ppl) but did you speak to me face to face before?)in fact, i'm really a SHY person, likes to avoid ppl, don't liek to maintain an eye contact with anybody serious.

don't judge anybody by the appearances, whoever okay? very well-known statement but not well applied in our society
